No.1 Sarcasm

The British are really sarcastic, to the point where it might actually annoy foreigners.  It annoys Americans, because we do it too much.

A good example of sarcasm is where a person might say something, but the way they say it is meant to be taken as meaning the opposite.

As an example, when something is expected to happen, especially after warning someone about it, such as spilling a drink, one could say “What a surprise”.

Satire basically laughs at the foolishness of humans.  However, Political Satire is big in the UK.

In this video we look at some very common mistakes that Chinese people can make with their English punctuation and that is their usage of full stops and commas.

Sometimes, even Chinese students and business people with a high level of English make the mistakes mentioned in this video.

1: Full Stops

Firstly, full stops, known as a period if you learn American English.

Of course, just like with Chinese, English finished every sentence with a full stop.  However, there should never be a space before a full stop and always a space after.

Sometimes, sentences are finished with three full stops… These are referred to as ellipses and are used to indicate to the reader an unfinished thought, a leading statement, a slight pause, an echoing voice, an awkward silence or a trailing off into silence.

2: Commas

As with full stops, there should never be a space before a comma and always one space afterwards.

Commas are used in English to allow the reader to take breath and to connect simple sentences into compound sentences i.e. connecting two often dependent clauses.

But overall, commas are for adding natural pauses for the reader.

So if you remember the rules that with both full stops and commas there is never a space before them,
but always a space after them, that’s a great start.

With Chinese people often referring to the entire UK as 英国 Yīngguó, it is not really accurate to refer to the entire UK as England.  England is just one country within the collection of countries know as the UK.

The other countries that form part of the UK (The United Kingdom) are separate countries with their own names, cultures and identities, and are in many cases, very, very un-English.

The United Kingdom, or UK for short, is a sovereign state that includes a union of countries that includes England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Let’s start with the mid-range supermarkets.

5 Tesco

Tesco is Britain’s largest supermarket chain.

Tesco is of average price and selection, but Tesco stores are everywhere.

There are three types of Tesco stores:

Their regular supermarkets. These sell a wide range of foods and groceries. Look for the ‘world foods’ aisle and you will find some Chinese goods, such as noodles, rice and some Chinese sauces.

2: Tesco Extra

Sainsbury’s follows a similar format to Tesco, but the brand is often regarded as higher quality.

Both Asda and Morrison’s are mid-range supermarkets.

Asda stores tend to be large and sell most things, including electronics. Asda also has a local brand called Asda Local.

Aldi and Lidl are budget supermarkets. However, quality is not necessarily compromised with either brands.

Both are huge global German-owned chains. You will pay a lot less for own-brand goods. The produce is good quality, but you will not have the choice you have at other supermarkets.

You’ll find genuine Chinese goods, like Lau Gan Ma, sauces, noodles, rice, dumplings and Chinese vegetables.

5 Ways to Naturally Greet British People

Here are our top 5 ways to sound authentic when you greet British people.

Remember, all of these are informal greetings, so don’t say them to lecturers or your boss:

You can say ‘hey’ or the more American-sounding ‘hi’. Both are literally short for ‘hello’. Both are warm and friendly, but try not to use them in serious situations. So that’s ‘hey’, or ‘hi’.

‘Wassup?’ is a slang greeting, but commonly used by younger people and in informal settings.

It’s American in origin and means is the three words ‘what’, ‘is’ and ‘up’ pushed together. So don’t expect a literal answer and certainly don’t greet people of authority like this. So that’s ‘wassup’.

OK, so the UK has developed a bit of a reputation for having quite non-adventurous food. 20 years ago, maybe that was the case, but today, British people eat food from all over the world and they even like to eat spicy food too.

I know I said non-Chinese food, but British people do eat a lot of Cantonese food. This makes it onto the list, because it is not traditional Chinese food, rather it is made for Western people, by mainly Hong Kong immigrants.

When most British people think Chinese food, they are thinking about Cantonese dishes that became popular in the UK from the 1960’s onwards. Kung Fu Chicken, chicken in black bean sauce, egg foo yung, chow mein and egg fried rice.
