With Chinese people often referring to the entire UK as 英国 Yīngguó, it is not really accurate to refer to the entire UK as England. England is just one country within the collection of countries know as the UK.

The other countries that form part of the UK (The United Kingdom) are separate countries with their own names, cultures and identities, and are in many cases, very, very un-English.

1: The United Kingdom

The United Kingdom, or UK for short, is a sovereign state that includes a union of countries that includes England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Because a state is purely a political and legal concept, like the European Union, the UK is not a country and therefore, one cannot call themselves United Kingdom-ese, or a United Kingdom person.

Although England is home to a central government, the other countries are largely self-governing with their own governments.

Great Britain is actually the island comprising Scotland at the top, England in the middle and Wales to the West.

So, anyone from these countries, if they believe they feel they are British, can call themselves British.

The British Isles is a collection of over 6,000 islands with Great Britain being the largest.

The channel islands and the Isle of Mann are known as The Crown dependencies – They are self-governing and the UK is responsible only for their defence, international relations and they are not part of the United Kingdom.

So, England is just one country in the middle of Great Britain. Great Britain is where the British live.

It is strongly advised that you do not call Scottish, Northern Irish or Welsh people English.

They have their own distinct identities, cultures and even languages. In many cases, they do not wish to belong to the UK, just as many British people do not wish to belong to the European Union.
