Arriving in a new country and wanting to learn English fast requires mixing with the locals. Surely? But that’s not as easy as it sounds, right?
Many budding language learners ask ‘Is English Hard to Learn?’. Well, it is a little challenging, as it’s a mixture of languages, with influences from French, German, Scandinavian languages and more. But as with learning any language, it’s really a case of mindset, and immersing oneself in your target language environment is a surefire way of making progress. But where can you find the right people with similar interests and even a comparable language level to yours? We all know that the UK has a pub culture, but is this the sort of environment to source and interact with locals? Well, perhaps once or twice, in moderation, of course.
Meetup App
A great way to find people who share your interests is through the Meetup app. Meetup features sports, social, and educational groups which can be searched for by category, location and date. So you can find like-minded people in your area, and by regularly attending group meetings, you’ll be able to develop meaningful communications in no time.
HelloTalk App
HelloTalk is a language exchange app. You can search for a language partner by location, so using your city and you should be able to find a native speaker in your target language. After initiating a conversation, you might then want to organise an in-person meeting. Be mindful to respect others’ privacy and if you decide to meet in person, do so safely, meeting in public places, and informing others where you are going beforehand.
Facebook Groups
If you’re not familiar with Facebook, it’s the most popular social media service in most European and American countries. Searching for groups using your city name will show an array of groups covering many topics and categories. There should be a group that matches your interests.
Join Sports and Exercises Classes
Almost every area throughout the UK features its own sports municipal centre. In other words, every council runs its own fitness centre and they tend to offer a good variation of classes and clubs. Details will normally be available on display boars at the reception.
If you’re linked to a university, then the Students Union is the place to go! There’s a society for almost any interest. And finally, although we were trying to avoid drinking, there’s always your local pub. Many pubs have regular live events, and quiz nights and are, after all, the UK’s main social activity.
