When you arrive in the UK, it’s important to understand the British healthcare system, ensuring that you are registered with a GP (that’s a local doctor), a dentist and how you can find emergency medical centres and your local hospital, just in case of an emergency.

Number 1: Doctors or GP’s

Let’s look at doctors surgeries first, something that the British refer to as a GP; short for general practitioner.

If you’re a Chinese student, every British university has a department known as the Students’ Union. The Students’ Union will register you with a GP. They will give you the ‘Surgery’ name, the telephone number and address. Make sure you keep these details safe.

如果你是一名中国学生，每一所英国大学都有一个叫做学生会的部门。学生会会为你注册全科医生。他们会告诉你“外科医生”的名字、电话号码和地址。确保这些细节是安全的。

To find the location of your doctor and GP in the UK, take the postcode portion of the address and type this into Google maps, an app that can be downloaded for iPone and Android and that works very well in the UK.

要找到你在英国的医生和家庭医生的位置，把地址的邮政编码部分输入到谷歌地图中，这是一个iPone和Android都可以下载的应用程序，在英国google地图非常好用哦。

If you’re a visitor to the UK, you can find your nearest GP by simply doing a Google search for GP and then your locality. You will need to visit the GP surgery and you should ask for a ‘new patient registration form’. Complete this and hand it in at the reception.

In all cases, if you require urgent or out-of hours medical attention in the UK, all cities have a hospital and out-of-hours drop-in medical centres. More about these and hospitals in the next section.

2: Hospitals and Out-of-Hours Medical Centres

If you require medical attention and wish to see a doctor outside of normal hours and are not registered with a GP, then you will need to find an out-of-hours medical centre. These are in most towns and cities and will provide most kinds of non-urgent medical advice and treatment. To find your nearest out-of-hours medical centre either search for ‘emergency medical centre’ using Google, or call the UK’s NHS 111 medical hotline by dialling 111 on any telephone.

If you are very ill and require urgent medical treatment, then you will need to use a hospital. Most hospitals are run by the NHS, the UK’s free-to-use medical service. To find your nearest hospital search Google for “hospital” and if your problem is urgent, then dial 999 on any telephone. This is the UK’s emergency number for ambulances, fire and police.

Three: Dentists

Looking after your teeth requires a similar approach. If you’re a student, again, the university NHS will help you to register with a dentist, know as a dental practice. Keep the telephone number and address safe and use the postcode in Google maps to locate it.

For tourists, visitors and workers, use Google to find a local dentist. And also it is super expensive and I suggest that you can sort out your teeth problem before you come to UK.
You need to bear in mind though that there are two types of dentists in the UK :

Private dentists will require you to pay-as-you-go for treatment, which can be quite expensive in the UK.

NHS, which stands for National Health Service, the UK’s free for all health care system, if you have a valid visa, will provide you with simple treatments free-of-charge for a small administration fee.

If you are in pain and require urgent dental treatment, call 111 for NHS 111, the UK’s non-emergency medical hotline.

Dial 111 from any telephone for the NHS hotline. Operators will provide you with medical and dental advice. They will ascertain the severity of your condition and will refer you to medical and dental locations where you can receive the correct treatment.

If you or your partner are unwell and need urgent treatment, call 999 and the operator will ask what service you want. You can choose police, fire or ambulance.

If you call an ambulance, the operator will ask you for your location and condition and will send an ambulance as soon as possible.
